Problem
Components, motion, usage guidance and tokens were documented in different places, so designers went looking for answers and AI tools had nothing structured to build from.
Solution
An AI-readable design guide that brings it all into one structured source of truth, plus an AI-assisted workflow for documenting components.
Impact
Cut component documentation to around 4 minutes, with a framework shaped by research across Multimodal, Mobile and Web teams.
01 · The Brief
One Source of Truth
Create a scalable guide that brings components, motion, usage guidance and tokens into one structured source of truth, easily understood and maintained by both designers and AI.
02 · What I Built
A Framework for Every Component
Every component is documented in three layers, each written so a designer can read it and an AI can act on it.
-
Context (What)
The component’s purpose, intended use cases, and when not to use it.
-
Behavior (How)
How the component behaves, with the rules AI needs to interpret and reproduce that behavior consistently.
-
Application (Where)
When, where and how to use the component, with the decision logic AI needs to pick it and apply it correctly.
- One system
- Clear guidance
- Shared ownership
The Rest Is Under NDA
The research, the system and the workflow I designed are confidential, so they aren’t on this page. If you want to learn more, the full story is in my presentation.
